Emotions play a strong part in our health. When we are not able to control or properly express the full spectrum of those emotions, it can cause varied health problems like increased blood pressure, anxiety, headaches, depression, upset stomach, constipation, and many other concerns.
I was recently introduced to the emotion wheel by a therapist. The emotion wheel is a picture representation of the full spectrum of emotions that humans can have. One reason why this is an awesome creation is because it helps us realize that there is more to our emotions than we have been taught (or NOT taught as the case may be).
Most of us have a limited emotional vocabulary. We are not able to fully describe, to ourselves or to others, exactly what we are feeling in the moment. When that happens, it tends to make us over exaggerate what we are going through in the moment because we don’t have the words to properly represent our current state.
How to Use the Emotion Wheel
When looking at the emotion wheel, start in the middle. Start with the emotion that you are currently feeling. Then work your way out. Find the words that most succinctly describe what you are going through and note it. Once you figure out your exact feelings, you will be better able to deal with and diffuse them. When this happens, you will be one step closer to handling stress and maladaptive behaviors that can lead to diseases like hypertension, and other concerns.
