You are the expert!
Now that you’ve done everything you needed to do to become the expert in your field, you’re ready to take on the world! You’ve finally graduated from that VERY tough program (CONGRATULATIONS, by the way!!) You’ve completed your internship AND externship. There were countless hours that you poured into studying the intricacies in your field. You worked with loads of people to hone your skills and in the process you’ve seen some amazing results. There was knowledge gleaned from mentors, teachers, coaches and gurus. The most brilliant minds in your field. Now, you’re ready to hang your shingle and work on your own. I mean, that’s what you’re supposed to do when you’re an expert, right? The problem is… once you open your doors, you quickly realize that no one is showing up. * insert sad face *
Knowledge with no clients
You are now left with a lot of knowledge, a passion to share what you know, and a big, empty office. That’s not right! Where they do that at?! What went wrong? Why is no one walking through your door? Why doesn’t anyone see the value of your work? What’s REALLY going on?
The truth is, no matter what you know and how effective you are, if people don’t know that you are the expert, they will not invest in you. If you haven’t built trust, they will not contact you. And lastly, if they don’t understand what it is that you do, they don’t know how you can help them live better. In reality, people will only connect with what they see and who they know/understand.
You quickly realize that your expertise, though very valuable, is simply not enough. The reality is that you need to be more recognized in the community. The audience that you are trying to reach has to recognize you, know you, trust you, and understand your value to their lives. Otherwise, you will be wasting your time, you will start to second guess your choices and wonder what it is that you were ever thinking in the first place. That’s no bueno!
Building Your Brand
In order to build that brand and get more clients, there are a few things that you have to do beyond your expertise in order to grow your client base. The following are a few things that you can do: public speaking, book writing, blogging, and social media. These things will need to become a part of your everyday practice. Once you begin to understand this, you’ll be well on your way to growing your business and loving life. And most importantly, setting yourself apart from other experts in your field.
Have you tried any of these methods to grow your business? What worked best for you? Which methods had no effect on your business?
